Epilepsy Day Observed by Mumbai Educational Trust and India’s Epilepsy Foundation

In a noteworthy endeavor to tackle the issues linked to epilepsy, an important initiative for raising awareness and enhancing epilepsy management was held through a Continuing Medical Education (CME) session. The focus was on “Recent Developments in Epilepsy Awareness,” and it was chaired by Dr. Nirmal Surya. This gathering of healthcare specialists and around 300 individuals living with epilepsy (PWE) provided a platform to discuss recent advancements in epilepsy treatment and care.

This initiative, which merges expert knowledge with real-life experiences, signifies a crucial milestone in the continuous effort to empower people with epilepsy and educate them about this intricate neurological disorder. A Coffee Table Book titled “106 Free Epilepsy Camps in Maharashtra,” created in partnership with the National Health Mission (NHM), was revealed by V. Vaidyanathan, the managing director and CEO of IDFC First Bank.

The prominent figures present at the occasion included Chief Guest V. Vaidyanathan, managing director and CEO of IDFC First Bank; Prof. Dr. Sangeeta Rawat, dean of KEM Hospital; Anil Singhvi, chairman of I Can Investment Advisor Pvt. Ltd; Dr. Swati Lodha, director of MET Institute of Management; and Dr. Nirmal Surya, the founder trustee and chairperson of the Epilepsy Foundation.

“Epilepsy is a neurological condition resulting from excessive electrical activity in neurons, leading to seizures. Symptoms can include seizures, unconsciousness, body stiffness, respiratory issues, loss of bladder and bowel control, falls, eye blinking, and lip smacking. Causes encompass brain damage, strokes, severe brain injuries, meningitis, encephalitis, genetic disorders, and brain tumors. Millions face epilepsy, alongside myths and misconceptions, diverting many to alternative treatments instead of consulting neurologists. The treatment gap in India, especially in rural regions, is around 70-80% due to delayed diagnosis and treatment and increased risk of birth trauma from a shortage of expert delivery facilities at hospitals. The CME served to engage the community in epilepsy education and support,” expressed Dr. Nirmal Surya, founder trustee, and chairman of the Epilepsy Foundation.

Dr. Nirmal Surya also remarked, “The CME session on ‘Recent Developments in Epilepsy Awareness’ was enlightening for attendees, highlighting pathways to improved comprehension and management of this complex neurological condition. It underscored that in medicine, each new understanding has the potential to revolutionize patient care. By integrating medical education with public outreach efforts, we’re ensuring both healthcare providers and patients stay informed with the latest resources. Performances by PWE highlighted their abilities, conveying that epilepsy is not a stigma in today’s society, and effective management is achievable with timely treatment. To boost this cause, Shri Vaidhyanathan commended the Epilepsy Foundation’s efforts and announced a significant donation of Rs. 25 lakh for the welfare of those with epilepsy. We are committed to undertaking additional transformative initiatives in the future to enhance patients’ quality of life.”
