Boston Scientific Advances with Plans for Minnesota Growth

According to Finance & Commerce, Boston Scientific (NYSE:BSX) is proceeding with its extensive expansion plans in Maple Grove, Minnesota. The Maple Grove Planning Commission has endorsed a proposed building extension at their Weaver Lake Road site, anticipated to enlarge the facility by 84,000 square feet to complement the existing 86,000-square-foot space.

The commission has advocated for the project approval to advance to the planned development stage, with final approval expected from the City Council on December 2, a report noted. Finance & Commerce also highlighted that during this process, Peter Vickerman, Maple Grove’s planning manager, confirmed the council’s pending decision.

These developments are part of Boston Scientific’s initiative, known as “Project Black Bear,” which kept the company’s identity under wraps until its uncovering by Finance & Commerce last summer. The project involves a hefty $170 million investment in a new division headquarters.

A Boston Scientific spokesperson told MassDevice in mid-2023 that the company will relocate employees from Maple Grove and Minnetonka who work in peripheral interventions, interventional cardiology therapies, Watchman, and urology divisions to the new site. This expansion is expected to generate 177 jobs with an average wage of $65 per hour.

Recognized as the largest employer in Maple Grove, Boston Scientific already has a workforce of approximately 4,000 in the area. Over the last few years, the company has incrementally grown its four-building campus situated near Interstate 94 and Weaver Lake Road.

In addition to its base in Marlborough, Massachusetts, the company hosts a prominent R&D and manufacturing center in Arden Hills, Minnesota, located opposite Maple Grove across the Minneapolis-St. Paul metro region.
