Karl Storz Debuts AI Innovation to Boost Operating Room Performance

Karl Storz U.S. has rolled out Pathway.AI, a novel tool in collaboration with Artisight, within the United States.

Artisight’s smart hospital platform supports the AI tool that is crafted to detect and address changes in the operating room (OR) status. This tool can potentially lower turnover times and eliminate numerous manual tasks, likely enhancing OR efficiency and improving data precision.

This initiative represents Karl Storz’s most recent venture in the OR domain, subsequent to its acquisition of Asensus Surgical in August. Asensus has developed the Intelligent Surgical Unit (ISU), a real-time surgical image analytics platform for the Senhance robotic system, using augmented intelligence to decrease surgical variability. Asensus is also advancing its next-gen Luna robot.

Artisight’s system employs ambient sensors, microphones, and machine learning algorithms to observe and evaluate OR workflow activities in real-time, featuring automated data capture to streamline operations, avert hold-ups, and optimize resources.

Pathway.AI is a customizable and localized tool enabling systems to refine precision and address model drift and bias. It maintains OR privacy with real-time confidentiality filters.

Dr. Andrew Gostine, Co-founder and CEO of Artisight, described the collaboration as “a critical juncture in the expansion of artificial intelligence in healthcare.”

“Artisight’s prowess in healthcare AI perfectly aligns with KARL STORZ’s established role in transforming the surgical suite,” remarked Connie Padden, Director of OR1 Technology Integration at Karl Storz U.S. “Introducing the Pathway.AI automation tool will enable us to offer novel value to clinicians in the pivotal OR setting.”
