Medtronic (NYSE: MDT) has revealed the completion of its initial patient procedure using the advanced PillCam Genius SB capsule endoscopy kit. The University of Miami Health System (UHealth) has marked a significant milestone by successfully executing this first ingestion with the latest PillCam model. This innovative product received FDA approval in May.
PillCam capsule endoscopy has been a staple for more than two decades. Medtronic secured FDA authorization for the PillCam Small Bowel (SB) 3 system aimed at remote endoscopic procedures in late 2021. This technology is directly accessible to patients, who, through telehealth consultations, can be directed by healthcare professionals during the remote procedure.
The PillCam Genius SB package enhances adaptability through its streamlined management of equipment. It is versatile enough for use in hospitals, clinics, or at home. Designed to offer a thorough view of the small bowel mucosa in adults, it assists in diagnosing and observing conditions such as Crohn’s disease, unexplained gastrointestinal bleeding, and iron deficiency anemia—particularly when traditional endoscopic methods fail to locate these issues.
Medtronic’s solution replaces conventional data recorders with a linking device. This compact, single-use electronic equipment effectively stores images transmitted from the capsule and signals patients through vibrations, sounds, and LED lights when the procedure is concluded. The company emphasizes comfort with its user-friendly adhesive design.
“Focusing on diagnostic accuracy and maximizing patient ease is central to our mission,” stated Raj Thomas, head of Medtronic’s Endoscopy division. “This inaugural ingestion underscores the transformative capabilities of the PillCam Genius SB kit, offering enhanced access and convenience for patients and healthcare providers alike.”
