Ample Supply of TB Medications, Affirms Health Ministry

The Ministry of Health and Family Welfare has challenged recent reports claiming an alleged scarcity of tuberculosis medications in India, describing such assertions as false and misleading.

As of December 6, 2024, the National Tuberculosis Elimination Programme (NTEP) boasts over two months’ worth of essential TB medication stocks.

The Ministry has also initiated steps to boost the reserve stock of these drugs to more than six months at each operational level, including State and District Drug Stores and TB Units.

Throughout the 100 Days Campaign, the initiative is targeting 347 districts identified as high priority for intensified strategies. These initiatives include increasing case detection through public awareness activities, comprehensive screenings, and providing necessary diagnostic tools for prompt diagnosis.

“Extensive efforts are underway to guarantee the availability of all necessary resources, particularly TB medications, across all operational levels, including 347 districts. Consistent evaluations are performed to assess inventory levels from central warehouses to local health facilities,” the Ministry stated.

Measures have been established for the prompt acquisition and distribution of TB drugs, with orders already placed. Distribution has begun to ensure there is an adequate supply to meet the rising demand throughout the campaign.
