The Department of Biotechnology (DBT) is inviting researchers from leading research institutions, universities, and non-profit R&D organizations across the country to apply for its 2024-25 research associateship in biotechnology and life sciences.
The program’s second call has been announced, with qualified candidates urged to submit their applications between November 22 and January 3, 2025, through the online portal.
The DBT-Research Associateship (DBT-RA) aims to train and nurture young researchers, building a critical mass of skilled professionals in advanced fields of biology and biotechnology, thus strengthening postdoctoral talent in the national biotech sector, according to the Department.
Premier research institutions, universities, and non-profit R&D organizations in India are eligible to host these associateships, awarded under the “DBT-Research Associateship” initiative backed by DBT, Ministry of Science & Technology, Government of India.
Applicants must possess a Ph.D. degree in Science or Engineering, or an M.D./M.S. degree in any medical discipline with research interests in biotechnology and life sciences, along with a solid academic background.
Those who have submitted their Ph.D./M.D./M.S. theses can also apply, though successful candidates in this category will receive a reduced fellowship until they meet the degree requirements.
The maximum age for applicants is capped at 40 years for men and 45 years for women as of the application deadline. Employed candidates (whether permanent or contractual) may apply but must leave their positions to accept the fellowship.
This associateship is a temporary, full-time role lasting two years, reviewed annually, and may extend to four years in certain scenarios based on research progression, as per DBT guidelines.
Fellowships are a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for candidates, offered solely in India at recognized academic institutions, national labs, or other approved R&D facilities. Host institutions must provide both administrative and infrastructure support.
Fellows cannot engage with their Ph.D. mentors or work at the same institution where they completed their doctoral studies. Additionally, retired faculty members (e.g., Honorary Professors, Emeritus Professors/Scientists, and DBT Distinguished Professors) can mentor provided they show access to adequate resources and laboratories. Participants from the North East Region are eligible to work in any academic or research institution within India.
Earlier this month, the Department selected 50 individuals for the DBT RA program during its first fiscal year 2024-25 call.
