The International Pharmaceutical Federation (FIP) emphasizes the importance of strategic actions that pharmacists need to undertake in order to combat antimicrobial resistance (AMR).
In a recent release, FIP introduces six dedicated “AMR strategies,” tailored for each World Health Organization region, setting key objectives in the fight against AMR from 2024 to 2028.
These strategies are a collaborative effort by FIP and its regional pharmaceutical platforms, alongside FIP’s European members, recognizing the absence of a regional pharmaceutical forum for Europe.
For the African Region, the roadmap outlines eight critical areas for AMR and antimicrobial stewardship (AMS), including the promotion of point-of-care diagnostic tools to distinguish viral from bacterial infections and guide antimicrobial usage. In the Americas, six priority actions for pharmacists include educating fellow healthcare practitioners on AMR and fostering collaboration across various AMS initiatives.
Furthermore, the document highlights ongoing efforts in each region. For instance, pharmacists in the Eastern Mediterranean are actively engaged in monitoring and supporting individuals affected by drug-resistant microorganisms.
“AMR is an issue of global concern, and pharmacists worldwide must be prepared to tackle it. FIP is committed to assisting the profession through various approaches, including the setting of one of its 21 Development Goals on antimicrobial stewardship. These newly designed roadmaps build upon those created for the period 2020 to 2024, aiming to sustain momentum in addressing AMR,” commented Manjiri Gharat, co-chair of the FIP AMR Commission and a key contributor to the report.
