Hologic Finalizes Purchase of Gynesonics

Hologic (Nasdaq: HOLX) has officially announced the completion of its $350 million acquisition of Gynesonics. The Marlborough, Massachusetts-based medical technology company first revealed its plan to purchase Gynesonics in October. Gynesonics is known for creating innovative, minimally invasive medical devices focused on women’s health, including the Sonata system.

The Sonata system is specifically crafted for diagnostic intrauterine imaging and the transcervical treatment of symptomatic uterine fibroids, including those that cause heavy menstrual bleeding. The system uniquely merges real-time intrauterine ultrasound with targeted radiofrequency ablation to provide a truly incision-free procedure.

In a news release, Gynesonics President and CEO Skip Baldino expressed enthusiasm about the acquisition, praising Hologic’s “dedication to women’s health and their pioneering innovation,” which he sees as a “great match” for Gynesonics.

“We’re thrilled to finalize the acquisition of Gynesonics and broaden the reach of their Sonata system, which effectively complements our suite of minimally invasive solutions for managing heavy periods and fibroids,” stated Brandon Schnittker, President of Surgical Solutions at Hologic. “As global advocates for women’s health, we remain committed to equipping surgeons with diverse, state-of-the-art treatment options that aim to enhance the quality of life for women worldwide.”

This acquisition of Gynesonics represents Hologic’s second substantial purchase in a six-month span. Earlier, in July, Hologic completed a $310 million acquisition of Endomagnetics, a company focused on wireless breast surgery localization and lymphatic tracking solutions.
