ICMR’s New Actions to Boost Cutting-Edge Research and Tackle National Health Issues

India’s leading health research institution, the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR), is rolling out a host of new programs to drive innovative research and address the nation’s complex health problems.

To strengthen India’s healthcare sector, ICMR has recently launched an array of courses, prioritizing disciplines like epidemiology, epidemic intelligence, and health communication. These courses are designed to develop a skilled workforce in healthcare while updating professionals on the latest medical technologies.

ICMR’s courses span multiple critical areas, tailored to meet the shifting demands of healthcare. From frontline epidemiologists to media specialists, these programs enhance healthcare professionals’ expertise across diverse sectors.

Dr. Rajiv Bahl, ICMR’s director-general, expressed optimism on this development, remarking, “The introduction of these courses marks a progressive move in fortifying India’s healthcare framework. By enhancing the skills of healthcare personnel and nurturing innovation in medical education, we aim to elevate healthcare delivery quality and meet the nation’s evolving healthcare challenges.”

A significant highlight is the Online Health Communications Course, offering detailed insights into strategic communication, media management, and community engagement, emphasizing effective communication in spreading vital health information.

Recognizing the increasing demand for experts in epidemiology and epidemic intelligence, ICMR introduces the ICMR School of Public Health (ICMR-SPH). With advanced programs such as the Master of Public Health and Epidemic Intelligence Services Program, ICMR prepares a generation of skilled epidemiologists capable of tackling new health threats.

Moreover, the council is developing specialized diploma courses in medical device operation for roles like anesthesia, dialysis, and x-ray technicians.

“These courses reaffirm ICMR’s dedication to fostering advanced healthcare training and education, equipping the workforce to navigate the dynamic health landscape,” Dr. Bahl added.

To democratize healthcare education, ICMR partners with the National Programme on Technology Enhanced Learning (NPTEL) to initiate innovative courses boosting India’s healthcare workforce.

Through NPTEL, ICMR contributes significantly to disseminating healthcare knowledge. Offerings include the unique Online Certificate Course on ‘One Health’ — a first in India — addressing the interaction of human, animal, and environmental health.

ICMR also prioritizes addressing critical disease areas with its Extramural Research Programme, encouraging Indian scientists to submit impactful research proposals focused on diseases prevalent in India, both communicable and non-communicable.

In addition, ICMR embarks on creating evidence-based guidelines to guide antibiotic use in various clinical contexts. This initiative aligns with a broader mission to improve national healthcare by promoting evidence-informed clinical decisions.

Furthermore, ICMR leads breakthrough initiatives in infectious disease research, enhancing national diagnostic capabilities. Their cutting-edge efforts support health officials and bolster India’s public health readiness.

In moving forward, ICMR also launches the National Health Research Priority Projects to direct focus onto comprehensive health issues, signaling a sustainable transformation in the country’s medical research and healthcare approach.
