The International Pharmaceutical Federation (FIP) has unveiled a comprehensive ‘Knowledge and Skills Reference Guide for Pharmacists in Self-Care Support,’ coinciding with the annual observance of Universal Health Coverage Day on December 12.
“Self-care embodies the capacity of individuals and communities to enhance and sustain their health, avert diseases, and manage illnesses. Achieving universal health coverage relies on robust health systems, which can be fortified through efficient self-care practices. The World Health Organization (WHO) endorses evidence-based self-care strategies for health and wellness,” stated Dr. Dalia Bajis, FIP’s senior program lead.
This newly released guide has been tailored to suit pharmacy practice, drawing from the World Health Organization’s Competency Standards for Health and Care Workers to aid self-care, Dr. Bajis further explained.
“Healthcare is undergoing a transformation towards a proactive, person-centered model that empowers individuals to assume greater autonomy over their health. Pharmacists play a crucial and distinctive role in this shift. In numerous regions, obstacles such as geographic remoteness, financial limitations, or shortage of healthcare personnel hinder healthcare service access. Self-care serves as a means to overcome these challenges. To successfully implement self-care, it’s essential to provide it within contexts that are safe and supportive so as not to impose additional burdens on individuals. Positioned as trusted healthcare professionals at the community’s core, pharmacists frequently represent the most accessible providers for individuals seeking counsel and support,” explained Dr. Manjulaa Narasimhan, who leads self-care initiatives at the WHO.
The reference guide is meticulously crafted to be an extensive resource for pharmacists, equipping them with the requisite knowledge and skills to efficiently support self-care. It encompasses five principal areas: people-centric approaches; informed decision-making; collaborative efforts; professional conduct; evidence-driven practices; along with effective communication. Additionally, it underscores the critical role of pharmacists in helping individuals access reliable over-the-counter medications, discern symptoms necessitating medical attention, and make educated lifestyle decisions to foster health and prevent ailments.
