Indian under-trial medicine saved the life of a Nepali woman: Lung-liver and kidney was infected; the antibiotic fixed it

In early August, a 50-yr-antique girl from Nepal underwent tummy tuck surgical treatment to eliminate stomach fats in Lucknow. After some days, the girl developed a fever, which progressively was lung contamination. After some days,  the liver, as well as the kidney, was affected. The woman’s condition is very critical and she was put on ventilator support.

Gram-negative bacteria which was also known as Pseudomonas aeruginosa was only responsible for Woman’s condition. Gram-negative bacteria are resistant to most drugs, and in this case, no antibiotics other than colistin are not effective against the bacteria. After three weeks, Colistin’s effect on the bacteria also ended, which meant that there were currently no drugs to treat women. Meanwhile, the woman is transferred from the local hospital to Medanta.

Dilip Dubey, Dr. Medanta’s critical care physician, had read about WCK5222 in a research paper. He called his Wockhardt and asked for this antibiotic. Wockhardt’s lab told him that only family members of patients, even in good faith, can claim the drugs, and after approval by India’s Directorate General of Drug Control (DCGI). The woman’s family wrote to her DCGI and received approval to use this antibiotic within 48 hours.

Patients received 10 days of free treatment with WCK5222. Dr. Dubey said, “The patient was on the drug for 10 days, and it was his fifth day that the bacteria were cleared.” The patient was discharged on September 12th. The patient then came to Medanta Lucknow for 5 checkups. A few weeks ago, after treatment doctors allowed the woman to go to Nepal.

The drug was manufactured at the Wokhart Research Center in Aurangabad. Chief of the Institute, his Scientific Officer Mahesh Patel said: Now we begin his trial in India.
